"Business players would be worried under the condition,"
Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, (Antara) - An observer warns that the conflict between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and police is a potential threat to investment programs in Indonesia.

Dr M Firmansyah from the Mataram University said the conflict could be seen that the government is not serious in fighting corruption.

There has been no significant impact on the conflict on the economy, but investors may think that the government had failed to create legal certainty in the country, Firmansyah said.

"Business players would be worried under the condition," he said here on Monday.

He said it a challenge for the government of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), in maintaining law supremacy and a test to its seriousness to fight corruption.

Therefore, President Jokowi has to be firmed and consistent with his repeated pledge to stamp out corruption from the country, he said.

He said corruption is an element causing high cost to be paid by investors in the country.

"The cost of doing business in the country swells because of rampant corruption . The country`s products become less competitive," he said.

The fight against corruption should be intensified especially as ASEAN would soon implement its regional economic cooperation, he added.

"One would not be surprised if other ASEAN countries would be eager only to sell their goods to Indonesia but not interested in investing in the country," he said, adding, "No one would risk investing in a country where there is no legal certainty.

He strongly hopes the two law enforce3ment agencies could end their conflict for the sake of the people and the country.

"There is still a lot of work to do for the government to improve the people`s welfare," he said. (*)
