Magnitude 6.6 hits East Nusa Tenggara

Mataram (Antara NTB) - A quake measuring 6.6 on the Richter Scale hit West Sumba in the Indonesian eastern province of East Nusa Tengara at 18.02.24 local time on Friday.

The tremor was felt by people in Mataram in West Nusa Tenggara province.

Roni, a resident of Dasan Agung in Mataram, said he felt the tremor and ran out of the house even as it rained outside to escape any eventuality.

"It was indeed not very strong and lasted only some seconds but it nevertheless made me panic and decide to leave the house despite the heavy rain," he said.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, the epicenter of the quake was 14 kilometers southwest of West Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The agency said the quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami. (*)
