West Lombok To Open Turtle Information Center

West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, April 15 (Antara) - West Lombok District in West Nusa Tenggara Province is ready to open a Turtle Information Center.

"We are ready to establish the West Lombok Turtle Information Center not only in Indonesia but also in the world," West Lombon District Government spokesman Muhammad Taufik remarked here on Friday.

He made the statement at a function to establish the Turtle Corridor Essential Ecosystem Area and to release 100 baby turtles into the sea at the Kuranji Dalang Village.

Taufik said West Lombok District has been ready to provide the land requested by the Ministry of Forestry and Environment for setting up the Turtle Information Center.

Turtle is a species that has existed on Earth since millions of years and of the seven species found in the world, six are in Indonesia.

The six turtle species found in Indonesia are the green turtle (chelonia mydas), hawksbill turtle (eretmochelys imbricate), olive ridley (lepidochelys olivacea), leatherback turtle (dermochelys coriacea), flatback turtle (natator depressus), and loggerhead turtle (caretta caretta).

In the meantime, Chief of the West Nusa Tenggara Natural Resources Conservation Center Widada had noted that four of the six turtle species are found in West Lombok, and they are the hawksbill turtles, olive ridley turtles, green turtles, and loggerhead turtles.
